  19. <p>     A checklist of the political season's hot new defensive
  20. offense.

  22. <p>     The most popular political trend this year seems to be: when
  23. in doubt, hang it out. Candidates are telling more about
  24. themselves than voters may want to hear.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>FLORIDA
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     Gubernatorial candidate Lawton Chiles revealed that he took
  29. antidepression medication; in an attempt to force Chiles to
  30. reveal all his health records, his Democratic-primary
  31. challenger, Bill Nelson, released his own and disclosed that
  32. he had once had hemorrhoids.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>TEXAS
  35. </p>
  36. <p>     Ann Richards survived a primary opponenet's drug-test
  37. gambit, which revived stories about her alcoholism and rumored
  38. past drug use; her Republican opponent, Clayton Williams, told
  39. of his youthful trips to get "serviced" by protitutes.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>ARKANSAS
  42. </p>
  43. <p>     Sheffield Nelson, Republican opponent of incumbent Governor
  44. Bill Clinton, released campaign literature detailing a
  45. childhood spent "defending his mother and sisters against an
  46. alcoholic father who beat and verbally abused his family."
  47. </p>
  48. <p>MASSACHUSETTS
  49. </p>
  50. <p>     Hoping to remind voters about Congressman Barney Frank's
  51. embarrassing relationship with a male prostitute, Republican
  52. John Soto took an AIDS test and sent out a press release when
  53. he passed.
  54. </p>
  55. <p>SOUTH CAROLINA
  56. </p>
  57. <p>     Henry McMaster, a Republican candidate for lieutenant
  58. governor, revealed that he had smoked pot in college 20 years
  59. ago. The now commonplace disclosure had an unintended effect:
  60. Democratic prosecutor Jim Anders first said he had "no choice"
  61. but to prosecute, but then backed away.
